A-Club

Shortened name for Eversfield’s Astronomy Club; club that all Eversfield Cell members belong to that allows them to stay out past curfew regularly; extremely selective, with a lengthy application and interview process

Affinity

Type of Divining; includes Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Floral, Mineral, Animal, Healing, Weaving, Cyphering, Portency, and Empathy

Animal affinity

Type of Earth Divining involving animals and magic

Animal Diviner

One who can work with animals by using magic; commonly called a Beastie

Ann Arbor

Small city housing The University of Michigan; about an hour away from Eversfield Academy by car

Astronomy Club

Extracurricular group within Eversfield Academy theoretically focused on astronomy but actually the group all Eversfield Cell members belong to that gives them an easy excuse for being out past curfew regularly; extremely selective, with a lengthy application and interview process

The Augurs

Group of Diviners with the required skill with both Cyphering and Portency; advises the General and his or her Second and helps with the placement of all Warriors using their combined Cyphering and Portency

Beastie

One who can work with animals by using magic; less commonly called an Animal Diviner

Beechy

What Val and her clique call Elizabeth Blackwell’s Harriet Beecher Stowe common room

Berta’s Books

A bookstore in downtown Juniper specializing in local authors

Bespelled weapons (blade, sword, wooden stake, etc.)

Weapons enhanced by spells cast by Diviners; the spells make the Warriors’ weapons more effective at injuring and killing vampires

The Black Bean

Blackwell

Shortened name for Elizabeth Blackwell house

Blackwellians

Generally: members of Elizabeth Blackwell house, but Val and her clique also use it to refer to the unpopular members of Elizabeth Blackwell house

The Bloodlust

Gives Warriors a violent urge to kill something and a direction hinting of where the vampire hides; strength and accuracy depend on the vampire’s proximity and the crowd surrounding it; triggered by vampires

The Blue Barn

An eclectic shop in downtown Juniper owned by Millie Jankowski

Border spell

Complicated spell guarding the campus of each of the boarding schools hiding training Cells; immobilizes any vampire that crosses it and activates the Cull and Bloodlust of the training Cell’s Warriors; does nothing to humans

The Bureau

Group of up to eight Diviners that represent their respective affinities; advises the General and his or her Second and oversees the training and placement of all Diviners; sometimes refers to the General, the Second, and the group of Diviners (excluding the Augurs) as a whole

Cell First

In command of a Cell or training Cell; also known as the First

Cell Second

The second-in-command of a Cell or training Cell; also known as the Second

Cells

Groups of about twenty Warriors, a handful of Diviners, a Cell First, and a Cell Second set about the nightly activity of killing vampires; several within each region covering their own geographic territories; named after the nearest city or landmark; report to their respective Guides and Seconds

The ceremony

When the Augurs decide the future of the Warriors; occurs at least twice during a Warrior’s life: when they move up from the group of younger Warriors to the group of older Warriors within a training Cell and when they graduate from a training Cell to a regular Cell; also occurs whenever the Augurs need to fill a vacancy in the Firsts, the Guides, the Seconds, or the General.

Civilians

Those who aren’t vampires, Warriors, or Diviners; can also refer to those Warriors and Diviners who live outside Troupes and Cells

Command

Supernatural ability of Firsts, Guides, Seconds, and the General to force Warriors and Diviners to follow their orders; can also reference the magical ability of Seconds to force their Firsts to follow their orders if it’s in the Firsts’ best interests (unclear who or what decides if that’s true)

The Cull

Gives Warriors supernatural senses and enhances Warriors’ physical superpowers; comes with a nervous energy; triggered by vampires

Cygnet

A sophomore or freshman member of the Order of the Swan not-so-secret society at Eversfield Academy; hand-picked by the upperclassmen of the Order of the Swan

Cypher

One who can use the Cyphering affinity

Cyphering affinity (Cyphering)

Type of Spirit Divining that reveals what’s hidden beneath the surface; typically used to assess the strength of a newly manifested Diviner affinity and to find Latents

Cyphering scan

Magical examination that Cyphers use to assess manifested Diviner talents; can be quick to get a general overview of a Diviner’s powers or longer for a more detailed view

The Detached

Less common term for those Warriors and Diviners who decide to live as a civilian without the approval of the General or the Bureau

Detachers

Those Warriors and Diviners who decide to live as civilians without the approval of the General or the Bureau

Detroit

Closest major city to Eversfield and Juniper; about an hour and half away from Eversfield Academy by car; Detroit Cell lives nearby

Detroit Cell

Cell based near the city of Detroit

Diviners

Vampire hunters with magical abilities who assist in the fight against vampires; types include Elemental Diviners (Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth) and Spirit Diviners (Healing, Weaving, Cyphering, Portency, and Empathy); have a supernatural drive to kill vampires

Divining

The act of doing magic

One who can work with the Earth affinities of Floral, Mineral, or Animal by using magic

EATS

Acronym for Eversfield Annual Talent Showcase, an annual talent show at Eversfield Academy; commonly used among Eversfield students to reference the annual talent show

Elemental Diviners (Elementals)

Those who work with Elemental Divining affinities; types include Fire Diviners, Water Diviners, Wind Diviners, and Earth Diviners including the Earth subcategories of Floral Diviners, Mineral Diviners, and Beasties

Elemental Divining

Divining involving the elements; affinities include Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth including the Earth affinities of Floral, Mineral, and Animal

Elizabeth Blackwell house

Girls dormitory within Eversfield Academy; houses Lila, Marina, Val, and others; also called Blackwell and Lizzie

Empath

One who can sense and/or control another person’s (or people’s) emotions through magic

In command of a geographic region with the help of a Second and a few Diviners; reports to the General and the Bureau

One who can use magic to accelerate healing

Healing affinity (Healing)

Type of Spirit Divining that accelerates healing by using magic

Healing scan

Magical examination that Healers use to assess injuries of those in their care

HQ

Headquarters of the North American Nightstalkers where the General, his or her Second, the Bureau, and the Augurs live; it’s also where everyone assigned administrative duty or research lives, where post-graduation Warriors train before joining a Cell, and where the SourceBooks are stored

The Indestructible

Vampires; undead creatures that must drink blood to survive

Acronym for Juniper City College

Loose organization of those born to fight vampires, whether that’s through supernatural abilities (Warriors) or magic (Diviners); very extended family of vampire hunters living on every continent and consisting of members of every nationality, race, religion, and background; all possess a supernatural drive to kill vampires though it’s stronger for some than others

North Fruitvale

Community clustered around the northern end of Fruitvale

Public high school situated in North Fruitvale; where Lila’s dad works and where Lila went to school before Eversfield Academy

The Order of the Swan

An Eversfield Academy not-so-secret society that Val and her popular friends belong to

Pasteur

Type of Spirit Divining that reveals potential futures typically in the form of visions

Portent

One who receives Portency visions revealing potential futures

Regions

The divisions of a continent into geographic areas with one Guide presiding over each region

The Second

The second-in-command, whether that’s of the entire continent as the General’s Second, of a region as the Guide’s Second, or of a Cell or training Cell as the Cell Second; in certain instances, can overrule his or her leader

Segments

The divisions of the global Nightstalkers into independent continents with one General presiding over each segment

Smience

What Val and her clique call Eversfield’s math and science building

Books of Spirit Divining spells and advanced techniques kept at HQ by the Bureau; limited access provided to Diviners within HQ only

Spellmap

A tool Weavers use to document the form of a spell, especially that of a complicated spell

Spellsight

A magical ability Weavers use to see spells

Spellstream

The individual portion of a spell originating from a specific elemental or spirit affinity; in a Weaver’s spellsight, each spellstream type appears in a different color; for example, Water spellstreams are blue

Spirit Diviners

Those who work with spirit affinities; types include Healers, Weavers, Cyphers, Portents, and Empaths

Spirit Divining

All Divining that doesn’t include the elements; affinities include Healing, Weaving, Cyphering, Portency, and Empathy

Swan

Someone who belongs to the Order of the Swan not-so-secret society at Eversfield Academy; technically only seniors are Swans, but it can reference everyone in the Order of the Swan

Swanling

A junior member of the Order of the Swan not-so-secret society at Eversfield Academy

Tec

Shortened name for Tecumseh house; used primarily by Val and her clique

Temp

Vampire-Spirit Diviner hybrids with very weak Weaving, Cyphering, Portency, and Empathy; typically become dust around six months after the turn

Training Cells

Cells in training hidden in boarding schools; consist of one group of five or six older Warriors (juniors or seniors), one group of five or six younger Warriors (freshmen or sophomores), and four Diviners spread throughout the four years of high school covering most of the Divining affinities; by day normal high school students and by night vampire hunters; report to their respective Guides and Seconds

Troupes

Communities of retired Diviners, retired Warriors, and their children who are too young for high school; train future Warriors and Diviners and support nearby Cells and training Cells

Tubby

Shortened name for Harriet Tubman house; used primarily by Val and her clique

Wind Diviner

The Wipe

Erases all of a civilian’s memories of a vampire encounter; typically applied by Healers while they heal a civilian of his or her vampire-induced injuries
